How David Labistour travels

David Labistour is as impressive a sportsman as he is a businessman. The CEO of Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) – a venerable Canadian outdoor brand – is a passionate kite-surfer, mountain biker, snowboarder and skier, and has windsurfed at international level. Meanwhile, his retail career has spanned three decades and two continents, and taken in product design, management, buying and strategic planning. Prior to taking the CEO role at MEC, Labistour was senior manager of buying and design, and is widely credited with bringing new vigor and credibility to the 40-year-old brand. Tully Luxury Travel caught up with David to find out about his travel essentials and his packing habits.

What kind of bags do you travel with?

When I travel for work I go as small as possible, but on vacation I’m just the opposite. Kites, boards, skis. So I use equipment-specific bags and a large roller duffel. When we arrive at the airport we look like we are moving home, and packing the rental car at the other end is like playing a game of Jenga.

In my personal bag I pack items of value and things to pass the time away. So Passport (1), credit cards and media; an iPad loaded with books and movies (2); and headphones (3). I also carry a camera and an extra lens (4).

Tell us about the three essentials you always bring with you…

An item of clothing

It is weather- and destination-dependant, but the one piece that I always take is a light packable down jacket (5). It has both water-resistant fabric and water-repellent down, which makes it functional in a wide range of conditions. And because it packs down so small it is easy to carry.

An accessory

An iPhone. GPS (6), web access, translator, and soon a mobile wallet too. Everything you need in your pocket.

A grooming product

Sunblock (7), for sun or snow.

What tech do you always take on vacation?

Other than my phone and iPad, a Buckshot Bluetooth speaker (8), a solar charger (9) and backup power pack.

What do you read when traveling?

When I am on holiday I devour thrillers. I load a few on my iPad before I travel.

What’s the one thing you’d NEVER travel without?

My curiosity!
