The World Cruise is a bucket-list experience wrapped in luxury.
One moment you’re getting a history lesson in Trujillo, Peru, with its pre-Inca pyramids and excavated adobe city. The next you’re sipping caipirinhas, Brazil’s national cocktail, as you explore the tropical paradise of Ilha Grande from the comfort of a schooner. It’s just another day in paradise when you’re sailing along on Crystal Cruises’ latest around-the-world adventure.
With Crystal Cruises’ 2017 World Cruise, guests can tick off an impressive number of bucket-list travel items as they experience South America’s most storied landmarks and cities − as well as up-and- coming destinations yet to reach even the most well-travelled jet setter’s radar − all in the lap of luxury.
Consisting of six segments ranging from 10 to 23 days, the cruise takes guests on an extensive tour of South America and the Caribbean, stopping off in cosmopolitan cities, old-world villages and off-the-beaten-path islands.
On the Incan Influences stretch (Colón to Valparaíso, January 22 to February 11), spend a day cruising the legendary Panama Canal. Stay the night in the bustling town of Colón , Panama, see the beautiful beaches of Manta, Ecuador, and visit the historic city of Lima, Peru, with its many museums, colonial mansions and churches.
With Antarctic Adventure (Valparaíso to Buenos Aires, February 8 to March 3), continue on to Argentina, cruising Antarctica, the Falkland Islands and Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost town. In Chile, explore the maze of alleys, winding streets and stairs that climb the hills of the picturesque port, Valparaíso. Take in the forests, towns and lakes of Puerto Montt and the Chilean Lake District. And have your camera ready to capture the colourful palafitos, traditional wooden houses built on stilts over the water, on the island of Chiloé.
The Tangos and Sambas segment (Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro, March 3 to March 14) offers a deeper experience of Uruguay and Argentina, as well as seven nights in Brazil. Stroll the wide avenues, charming cafes and elegant parks of Buenos Aires. Join the rich and glamorous in Punta del Este, Uruguay, at its chic hotels and restaurants, beaches and casinos. On Ilha Grande, one of the last protected remnants of the Atlantic rainforest, explore tropical forests, pristine waterfalls and majestic peaks.
On Amazon Expedition (Rio de Janeiro to Barbados, March 14 to April 5), an intensive Brazilian itinerary includes calls to Devil’s Island, Granada and Barbados. In Rio, see the legendarybeaches of Copacabana and Ipanema and catch the non-stop action of Rio’s locals as they shop, eat and dance through the day and night. Sway to the African-influenced sounds of Salvador da Bahia and tour the historic monuments of Pelourinho, which make Bahia home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The 94-day journey sets sail on January 10, 2017 from Miami aboard the Crystal Serenity and features many immersive shore excursions along the way. Snorkel off the coast of Ecuador,
lunch at the foot of the Andes Mountain range and journey into Tierra del Fuego National Park by chartered train. From winery visits to horseback riding and river rafting, the choices are endless.
Extended adventures are also possible. Those sailing in Deluxe Stateroom with Verandah and Penthouse category accommodations can choose from complementary pre- and post-cruise
“We take care of all the logistics, from transportation to land accommodation and programming,” says Edie Rodriguez, President and CEO, Crystal Cruises, of the multi-day Mystical Machu Picchu and Inspiring Iguazu Falls extensions, which see guests explore the Incan fortress city and experience one of the world’s great natural wonders up close.
“The overlands, the food, the entertainment, the enrichment programs, the service − everything is absolutely wonderful,” says Mary Jean Tully, founder and CEO of Tully Luxury Travel, an award-winning Canadian travel agency. “It’s the Crystal standard. They’ve always
been innovators.” In 2015 and 2016, almost 20 per cent of Crystal’s World Cruisers were Tully clients.
She has just returned from the 2016 World Cruise and hosted a private luncheon for Tully Luxury Travel’s clients on The Great Wall of China while Crystal Serenity was at port in Beijing.
“The best part was that we were the only ones there. As far as my eye could see, it was only our group for miles and miles. I’ve been to the Great Wall four times but nothing compares to
this spectacular experience,” Tully says.
Crystal Serenity emerged from a $17-million redesign in 2013 with a new contemporary style inspired by southern California. “It’s an absolutely gorgeous vessel, but what I love about
the ship is that there are lots of ways to experience intimate venues on her,” says Rodriguez. Guests will experience onboard programming and entertainment that tie into the ports of call.
"Exclusivity, customization and options − everything we do at Crystal is built on these three things,” says Rodriguez. “Some people want to go on traditional excursions, some people want their own personal guide. We offer every option.”
